U.S. confirms fifth Takata air bag inflator death in 2022, urges owners to get repair

reiterated urgent calls for owners to get repairs.

Owners were urged to get repairs done as soon as possible.

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed a third Takata air bag inflator death.

More than 67 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled in the United States over the last decade.

More than 100 million people worldwide participated in the largest auto safety recall in history.

Stellantis urged owners of 276,000 older vehicles in the United States to stop driving immediately following the crash death reports in November.

However, only 2,000 owners have received repairs since then.

In November, the NHTSA confirmed a new death in a 2006 Ford Ranger pickup caused by a faulty Takata air bag inflator.

The Takata recalls were prompted by propellants that could degrade after prolonged exposure to humidity and high temperature fluctuations.
